In the first reading for today from Exodus we are told of the time in the wilderness journey when the people of Israel complained that Moses had led them to a place where there was no water for them or their livestock to drink. Doubting that God is still with them, the people demand that Moses do something, and Moses in frustration turns to the Lord God asking "What am I to do with this people?" God replies to Moses, instructing him to take the same staff that he used to strike the Nile in his duels with Pharaoh's magicians and go to Mt. Horeb where God will meet him. When Moses arrives, God is there and directs Moses to a solid rock, telling him to strike it with his staff. When Moses does, water immediately begins to gush forth and the people are saved. The people are, for the moment, satisfied - but God is displeased with their lack of faith and so the place is named Massah (test) and Meribah (finding fault). ( Exodus 17:1-7)
In the second reading from Romans, St. Paul continues his exposition on faith and one's relationship with God. Our restored relationship with God - our righteousness - comes not from our perfection or even our repeated efforts to live according to God's will. Rather, our salvation is accomplished for us by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God's Messiah. God did not wait for us to succeed in attaining perfection but in love came and died for us while we were still rebelling against God's holiness and God's call. And now, having been reconciled to God by Jesus' death, we are free to live in the fullness of God following the life of Jesus.
( Romans 5:1-11)
The Gospel reading from John tells of Jesus' encounter with a woman of Samaria by the well of Jacob the Patriarch. By the time of Jesus, the Samaritans, residents of the region to the west of Galilee who shared a common heritage with the people of Israel but differed in their religious practices, were considered to be apostates and no different from gentiles. It would have been highly irregular for any Jew to have any interaction with a Samaritan whatsoever, and it would have been absolutely unheard of for a Jewish Rabbi to converse with a Samaritan woman. Jesus engages her in conversation. The discussion turns from Jesus' need to draw some water from the well for his thirst to a deeper discussion of God's salvation and Jesus' identity as God's Messiah. Jesus tells the woman that, despite the religious differences between her people and his, God's salvation will be for all people. He then likens himself to a kind of living water that assuages thirst, both physical and spiritual. When the woman asks for this water, Jesus instructs her to go and bring her husband, knowing that she has had many husbands in her life. The woman understands immediately that Jesus is no ordinary Rabbi and she goes to tell her kinsmen that she has found the Messiah. When the disciples, who have gone into the village for supplies, return they question the wisdom and propriety of Jesus' speaking with such a woman. Jesus responds with a metaphor of a great harvest that must be gathered in regardless of who planted the seeds. His message is that his Message - the message of God's salvation - is intended for all who will hear and receive it. ( John 4:5-42) |

Help lead monthly worship at De Witt Nursing Home Next Sunday March 2 at 1:45 pm. All are invited to join our Confirmands and leaders to assist in the 2:30pm Eucharist for the Seniors at the DeWitt Nursing Home on 79th Street (just off 3rd Avenue). If you are interested in participating in this ministry, which brings so much cheer to the residents, please call the Rev. Pippa Turner at 212-289-3400, ext 213 or email her at pturner@heavenlyrest.org. We will depart from the 2 East 90th Street entrance of the church at 1:45 pm and return to CHR by 3:45pm.
Calling all Youth: Monday March 3 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Youth in 6th - 12th grades are always welcome to our Monthly Monday night of fun, fellowship and food. We meet in the Good Shepherd room and enjoy the comfort of the bean bags as we nibble on snacks, share our 'highs' and 'lows', and order pizza. Our next meeting is Monday, March 3 when we will also fill plastic eggs with chocolates for the Easter Egg Hunt (and perhaps eat a few in the process). Questions? Call the Rev. Pippa Turner or Caren Miles at 212-289-3400.
Getting Right With God: The Lenten Rector's Forum, held Sundays at 9:30 am in Darlington Hall offers a series of discussions on the various Christian understandings of atonement. How has the Church historically—and in modern times—tried to understand how the death and resurrection of Jesus accomplished the work of reconciling humanity and creation to God? This five-week series will explore the roots of atonement in the Jewish sacrificial system and will then examine the classical theories of atonement along with contemporary theological thought.
Adult Confirmation, Baptism and Reception: Adults who are interested in being baptized, confirmed or received from another denomination, or who would like to renew their baptismal vows at the Bishop's Visitation on May 25, should contact the Rev. Tom Synan at 212-289-3400, ext. 214 or email him tsynan@heavenlyrest.org.
Friday Fling: March 14 at 7:00 pm. Come get a jump start on spring! Gail Zimmermann and Daryl VanValkenburg will host the first fling of the spring (a few days early). So, pop a daisy in your lapel, bring a dish and a beverage to share and plan to spend the evening of March 14 greeting the season. Who knows, we may even be able to balance an egg. RSVP Gail and Daryl at 212-222-8169.
Palm Cross Making: Thursday, March 13 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Friday, March 14 from 10:30 am-4:00 pm in the Choir Room. Heavenly Rest makes about 2,000 palm crosses for patients in hospitals and nursing homes throughout the city, as well as for the Palm Sunday services. The recipients are most grateful to receive these small reminders of Palm Sunday and often keep them by their beds for months. The work is organized by the Altar Guild, and everyone is welcome to come and spend an hour or two turning palm branches into crosses; (it takes about 10 minutes to learn how). Do join us!
Easter Basket Drive: CHR is collecting donations of Easter Baskets to be given to families who come to our holiday meal and for the Yorkville Common Pantry. Suggested contents are individually wrapped Easter candies, small toys or storybooks, and coloring books and crayons. We ask that all baskets be tied with cellophane and ribbon. You may drop off completed Easter Baskets at the church office before Monday, March 17.

Order of St. Luke – "A Ministry of Healing"
Each Sunday, while the Eucharist is being served, CHR's members of OSL pray in the Chapel. They are present to individually pray, with the laying on of hands, for and with all who come with special requests for healing. God is able to do much more then we can imagine, so why not avail yourself of this wonderful grace and come to be prayed for. OSL will be present in the Chapel, ready to welcome and pray for you; do come.
