Today in Word and Song

The first reading for today is from the First Book of Samuel, part of a two- volume account of the monarchy and the united kingdom of Israel. It bears the name of the great prophet (and king-maker) of the time: Samuel. In this passage, God confirms to Samuel that he has rejected Saul as king owing to Saul's disobedience before a battle with the Philistines at Gilgal. Saul's sin was that he made an offering to God to gain favor for the battle, without waiting as instructed for Samuel the priest to come to make the offering. While this may seem inconsequential to our modern sensibilities, it was very indicative of the tension between the political and religious powers of the emerging nation of Israel. In any event, God instructs Samuel to go to Bethlehem to the family of Jesse from whom God has chosen a successor to Saul. Samuel goes and invites Jesse and his sons to a sacrificial meal, waiting for God to reveal his chosen one. One by one the sons of Jesse are presented to Samuel and he is swayed by their physical stature and other kingly attributes, but God rejects each of them telling Samuel that God looks not at the appearance but at the heart. After all Jesse's sons have been presented and none are revealed as chosen, Samuel asks if there are any other sons. Only one, David, the youngest and a lowly shepherd, remains, but surely he is not what God is looking for. Samuel asks that David be summoned and, when he arrives, God tells Samuel to anoint him for he is the one. God has chosen not a warrior but a shepherd to lead his people.      (I Samuel 16:1-13 )

The second reading for today from the Epistle to the Ephesians lifts up the contrasting images of darkness and light as metaphors for the spiritual journey in Christ. In the same way that God in creation brought light into being, so Christ brings light to the lives of all the faithful. The darkness that fills the world is the darkness of sin, which blinds us from the presence and will of God. In the way, truth, and life of Jesus we are illuminated and given the power to see ourselves and the world as God sees. In the light of Christ we are able to love and serve one another seeing the presence of God in everyone and everything.      (Ephesians 5:8-14)

The Gospel passage, following on the theme from Ephesians, tells of Jesus' healing of a man who was born blind. The story plays out on two levels. First there is the actual healing and its obvious consequences. The blindness of the man is not due to any sin of his or his parents; it is instead an occasion for Jesus to demonstrate what God desires for all people - that they see themselves and all creation anew. Now that the man can physically see, he is able to behold Jesus, God's Messiah, and to experience not only the wholeness that such an encounter brings, but also how Jesus lives his life with God. Contrasted with this is the outrage of the Pharisees who see only a violation of the Sabbath Law because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus healed. It is they, even as religious leaders, who are blind. refusing to see the love and compassion that is the very nature of God.      (John 9:1-41)

Announcements & Opportunities

Lenten Devotionals and Mite Boxes: CHR has a variety of Lenten Devotionals for adults, children, youth and families. These booklets will help you prepare spiritually for Easter through daily meditation and reflection. All Devotionals can be found at the back of the nave on the resource table along with Lenten Mite Boxes. As your family explores the meaning of Lent, place coins in your mite boxes when giving thanks for the blessings in your life. This Lenten collection will be given to Episcopal Relief and Development, which provides emergency assistance in times of disaster. Please return the filled Lenten Mite Boxes on Easter Sunday, March 23.

Help lead monthly worship at De Witt Nursing Today: All are invited to join our Confirmands and leaders to assist in the 2:30 pm Eucharist for the Seniors at the DeWitt Nursing Home on 79th Street (just off 3rd Avenue) We will depart from the 2 East 90th Street entrance of the church at 1:45 pm and return to CHR by 3:45pm.

Calling all Youth: Tomorrow, Monday, March 3 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Youth in 6th –12th grades are always welcome to our Monthly Monday night of fun, fellowship and food. We meet in the Good Shepherd room and enjoy the comfort of the bean bags as we nibble on snacks, share our 'highs' and 'lows', and order pizza. Tomorrow we will also fill plastic eggs with chocolates for the Easter Egg Hunt (and perhaps eat a few in the process). Questions? Call the Rev. Pippa Turner or Caren Miles at 212-289-3400.

Getting Right With God: The Lenten Rector's Forum, held Sundays at 9:30 am in Darlington Hall, offers a series of discussions on the various Christian understandings of atonement. How has the Church historically—and in modern times—tried to understand how the death and resurrection of Jesus accomplished the work of reconciling humanity and creation to God? This five-week series will explore the roots of atonement in the Jewish sacrificial system and will then examine the classical theories of atonement along with contemporary theological thought.

Adult Confirmation, Baptism and Reception: Adults who are interested in being baptized, confirmed or received from another denomination, or who would like to renew their baptismal vows at the Bishop's Visitation on May 25, should contact the Rev. Tom Synan at 212-289-3400, ext. 214 or email him tsynan@heavenlyrest.org.

Easter Memorials: Anyone wishing to memorialize a family member, friend, or occasion through the Easter flowers in the church may notify the church office by next Monday, March 10.

Friday Fling: March 14 at 7:00 pm. Come get a jump start on spring! Gail Zimmermann and Daryl VanValkenburg will host the first fling of the spring (a few days early). So, pop a daisy in your lapel, bring a dish and a beverage to share, and plan to spend the evening of March 14 greeting the season. Who knows, we may even be able to balance an egg. RSVP Gail and Daryl at 212-222-8169.

Palm Cross Making: Thursday, March 13 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Friday, March 14 from 10:30 am-4:00 pm in the Choir Room. Heavenly Rest makes about 2,000 palm crosses for patients in hospitals and nursing homes throughout the city, as well as for the Palm Sunday services. The recipients are most grateful to receive these small reminders of Palm Sunday and often keep them by their beds for months. The work is organized by the Altar Guild, and everyone is welcome to come and spend an hour or two turning palm branches into crosses; (it takes about 10 minutes to learn how). Do join us!

This work, scored for choir, soloists, organ, and string quintet, will be presented as part of a traditional Evensong service.

Easter Basket Drive: CHR is collecting donations of Easter Baskets to be given to families who come to our holiday meal and for the Yorkville Common Pantry. Order of St. Luke – "A Ministry of Healing"

Each Sunday, while the Eucharist is being served, CHR's members of OSL pray in the Chapel. They are present to individually pray, with the laying on of hands, for and with all who come with special requests for healing. God is able to do much more then we can imagine, so why not avail yourself of this wonderful grace and come to be prayed for. OSL will be present in the Chapel, ready to welcome and pray for you; do come.
