Today in Word and Song

T, The first reading for today is from the great sixth-century BCE prophet Ezekiel who lived and ministered among the Jerusalem exiles in Babylon. Much of his prophesy resulted from a series of visions of God and symbolic representations of God's activity in, through, and for the people of Judah. Ezekiel was an oracle of both judgment and hope. In today's passage he uses the image of a small branch taken from the top of a great cedar tree, which God will plant and nurture on his holy mountain in Israel. It is a message of restoration and hope to the exiles; a promise that God will once again act to bring new life to his people. (Ezekiel 17:22-24)

In the second reading from II Corinthians, St. Paul speaks to his beloved Corinthian congregation with whom he has labored, loved, and, at times like a parent, suffered. He reminds the Corinthians of the essence of their hope in Jesus, which is that in Jesus they are always with God. The trials and tribulations of this life, while very real, are not ultimate. As members of the Body of Christ - the community of God's saving love - they are all new creations, living not just for themselves, but in and for Christ who died and rose for them. (II Corinthians 5:6-17)

In the Gospel reading from Mark, Jesus speaks of the Kingdom of God through the use of parables. The parable of the seeds points to the growth of God's Kingdom as Divine mystery rather than as the result of human accomplishment. This parable not only describes the growth of the Kingdom, but it also serves as an announcement that the Kingdom, like the harvest, has in fact arrived. The second parable, about a mustard seed, shows how great things come from small and seemingly unpromising beginnings. There is no casual relationship between the size of the seed and the shrub it eventually produces. Again, we cannot explain how the Kingdom, like the mustard seed, is able to grow to so many times its original size. We can say only that it is God's work. (Mark 4:26-34)

Announcements & Opportunities

Summer Church School: Children and youth of all ages will meet in Thomas Hall from 9:30 am to 10:15 for a series of fun lessons: Next Sunday’s lesson is "…like yeast." (Matthew 13:33)

Summer Worship:
This summer, in order to accommodate as many worshipers as possible we will continue our schedule of three services on Sunday mornings, as follows:
8:00 am: A simple service of Holy Eucharist, Rite I, with no music
9:00 am: A simple Rite II Holy Eucharist with music and hymns
10:30 am: Our usual Rite II Holy Eucharist with hymns, choral anthems, and organ.
Weather (ie: heat index) permitting, we will hold the 8 am and 9 am services in the Chapel. The 10:30 am service will remain in the church through June and move to the Chapel during July and August. Should the temperature become uncomfortable in June, we will move the 10:30 service into the Chapel as well.
We hope that this schedule will make it possible for all members of the Heavenly Rest to worship with us when they are in the city this summer.

Summer Bible Study: Sundays at 9:30 am in Darlington Hall. During the summer months, our weekly Rector’s forums will feature Bible study of the Sunday lectionary.

A New Ministry of Hospitality and Welcome: We are delighted to announce the opening of Heavenly Rest Stop, the Upper East Side’s newest oasis for coffee and refreshments in the peaceful setting of our Fifth Avenue Cloister and sidewalk. Heavenly Rest Stop will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome visitors into our space and introduce them to our parish by offering the elemental hospitality of a peaceful place for food and drink, and an open door to the church for quiet meditation.

New Welcome Table in the Narthex: We are currently seeking volunteer docents to provide friendly assistance and answer questions regarding our church for seekers and passersby. Training and reference materials will be provided, so you don’t need to be a Heavenly Rest expert to sign up for this new ministry. For details, please contact Richard Buonomo at gemstoner@msn.com or the Rev. Elizabeth Garnsey at egarnsey@heavenlyrest.org.

Pre-Convention Meetings with Deputation: The General Convention deputation for the Diocese of New York is planning several meetings in preparation for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Anaheim, CA in July. Part of the purpose of these meetings is to give members of the Diocese an opportunity to share their concerns and opinions on matters coming before the General Convention. The meeting schedule is:
6:00 pm Monday, June 15 Donegan Hall of Diocesan House, Amsterdam Ave at 110th Street
7:00 pm Wednesday, June 24 Christ Church, Poughkeepsie
The meetings are open, and anyone can come without notice. If you would like to come, it would help them with planning if you RSVP to Deputation Chair Jerry Keucher at jerrykeucher@gmail.com.

Family-Friendly Friday Fling chez Yates & Cacciato: Friday, June 19 at 6:00 pm. Our next Friday Fling will be an intergenerational soirée on the Upper West Side hosted by Marguerite Yates with Natalie, Richard and Alexander Cacciato. Our Heavenly Rest choir members (Adults, Boys, Girls, Choristers, St. Cecilia, Bells and Canterbury) are particularly encouraged to join in the festivities. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm and will be held outdoors (weather permitting), so bring a dish and beverage to share, plus a sweater and a singing voice. RSVP to Marguerite or Natalie at 212-874-6285 or mtyates@blue-iceberg.com.

Cooks Needed for Meals on Heels: We need volunteers to cook for the following Saturdays: June 27 - 2 cooks; July 25 - 1 cook; August 8 - 1 cook; September 5 - 2 cooks Each volunteer cook will prepare a nutritious three-part dinner (meat, vegetable, and potato) for five homebound recipients. Please note: This is a Friday night or early Saturday morning event. The meals must be dropped off Saturday morning at 122 East 88th Street by 11am so they can be delivered promptly by other volunteers. This is an at-home project: Cooks use their own kitchens and use aluminum partitioned containers, which you can pick up at the Church office. To sign up contact Deacon Caroline Boynton at 212-864-4021 or email caroline.boynton@gmail.com

Concert for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: This Tuesday, June 16, choir member Janine Ullyette will be joined by other musicians for a concert to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The variety show will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 619 Lexington Avenue (at 54th Street) at 8:00 pm. Suggested minimum donation: $20. Volunteer Opportunities

Fun at Lunchtime! Dedicated volunteers are needed for our Friday Senior Lunch Program.  Help turn Darlington Hall into a café by setting decorative tables, serving a catered buffet lunch, clearing disposable plates, and mingling with diners.  Lead post-meal rounds of Bingo as guests play to win back their $1.00 lunch tab!  This outreach brings needed opportunity for socialization and enjoyment, as well as tasty and nutritious meals, to our neighborhood elderly.  If you can commit one Friday per month from 12:30 pm -2:30 pm, please join this important fellowship.  Contact the Rev. Tom Synan at 212-289-3400, ext. 214 or by email at tsynan@heavenlyrest.org.

CHR Shelter:  The church provides shelter to pre-selected elderly guests Monday through Thursday.  Volunteers are needed to welcome and supervise guests for the night.  Volunteer Coordinator: Marilyn Budzanoski, 212-663-7923.
