Today in Word and Song

The first reading for Sunday is from the great theological and moral tale of Job. This story was never intended to explain suffering. Rather it seeks to extol the virtue of faith in the midst of all of life's vagaries. In this passage, we encounter Job who has just demanded a hearing from God after enduring numerous calamities, which his so-called friends insist must have occurred because of something he has done wrong. Job, on the contrary, insists on his innocence and is determined to receive an explanation from God. God's response comes in the form of a whirlwind wherein he reminds Job that he, God, is the author of creation and that none have any right to call his governance into question. We and Job are left with the words reminding us of God's sovereignty and deep care ringing in our ears. (Job 38:1-11)

The second lesson for today continues from St. Paul's second letter to the Christian church in Corinth. The apostle continues to offer justification for his ministry and his authority by recounting a litany of all he has done and suffered on behalf of the Gospel and the Corinthians. Paul does this, not in a spirit of condemnation or dismay, but rather to assure his readers of his love for them—a love which, like the love of God in Christ—is costly. Paul enjoins them to live in just such a manner; opening their hearts and their lives to one and other and all the world. (II Corinthians 6:1-13)

In the Gospel for today Jesus calms a storm in response to the disciples' terrified pleas to save them. Jesus' response to the storm as it buffets the disciples—as it is to the storms of our lives—is, "Peace, be still." The disciples are amazed at Jesus' ability to calm what has traditionally been understood as the chaos of the deep. (Mark 4:35-41)

Announcements & Opportunities

Carpenter’s Kids Pilgrimage: On Monday, July 13, the Rev Elizabeth Garnsey and Ruth Anne Cary, CHR Director of Finance and Administration, will make a pilgrimage to Tanzania to visit our linked parishes in the Carpenter's Kids Program. Over the next few weeks we are collecting donations of
• wooden spoons,
• potholders, and
• aprons.
Ruth Anne and Elizabeth will bring these items as gifts to the people of our linked parishes. Please bring your donations to church on Sunday or drop them off at the church office during the week. Alternatively, you may give a monetary donation that will be put toward the purchase of these gifts. Simply write “Pilgrimage” in the memo line of your check and drop it off at the church by July 12.
Additionally, Ruth Anne and Elizabeth are in need of a lightweight video camera to bring to Tanzania to record their pilgrimage. If you are able to loan or donate a video camera, please contact the church office. This is the third year of our five-year parish-wide pledge to Carpenter’s Kids, a program between the Diocese of New York and the Diocese of Central Tanzania for the purpose of education and nurture of HIV/AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children. Heavenly Rest parishioners are currently sponsoring 200 children in need among four Tanzanian parishes: Kigwe, Lufuto, Mbalawala, and Mita Mata. We are adding a fifth linked parish with 50 more children this year, sponsored by our confirmation class. Thank you for your generosity. You are changing the lives of children who otherwise would be unable to attend school. If you would like to sponsor a Carpenter's Kid or have questions about the program, please contact Elinor Loveridge at 212-289-3400 or email her at eloveridge@heavenlyrest.org

Summer Worship: This summer, in order to accommodate as many worshipers as possible we will continue our schedule of three services on Sunday mornings, as follows:
8:00 am: A simple service of Holy Eucharist, Rite I, with no music
9:00 am: A simple Rite II Holy Eucharist with music and hymns
10:30 am: Our usual Rite II Holy Eucharist with hymns, anthems, and organ.
Weather (ie: heat index) permitting, we will hold the 8 am and 9 am services in the Chapel. The 10:30 am service will remain in the church through June and move to the Chapel during July and August. Should the temperature become uncomfortable in June, we will move the 10:30 service into the Chapel as well.
We hope that this schedule will make it possible for all members of the Heavenly Rest to worship with us when they are in the city this summer.

Summer Bible Study: Sundays at 9:45 am in Darlington Hall. During the summer months, our weekly Rector’s forums will feature Bible study of the Sunday lectionary.

Summer Church School: Children and youth of all ages will meet in Thomas Hall from 9:45 am to 10:15 for a series of fun lessons: Next Sunday’s lesson is "…like a hidden treasure. “ (Matthew 13:44-46) • New Welcome Table in the Narthex: We are currently seeking volunteer docents to provide friendly assistance and answer questions regarding our church for seekers and passersby. Training and reference materials will be provided, so you don’t need to be a Heavenly Rest expert to sign up for this new ministry. For details, please contact Richard Buonomo at gemstoner@msn.com or the Rev. Elizabeth Garnsey at egarnsey@heavenlyrest.org.

Cooks Needed for Meals on Heels: We need volunteers to cook for the following Saturdays: June 27 - 2 cooks; July 25 - 1 cook; August 8 - 1 cook; September 5 - 2 cooks Each volunteer cook will prepare a nutritious three-part dinner (meat, vegetable, and potato) for five homebound recipients. Please note: This is a Friday night or early Saturday morning event. The meals must be dropped off Saturday morning at 122 East 88th Street by 11am so they can be delivered promptly by other volunteers. This is an at-home project: Cooks use their own kitchens and use aluminum partitioned containers, which you can pick up at the Church office. To sign up contact Deacon Caroline Boynton at 212-864-4021 or email caroline.boynton@gmail.com

Heavenly Rest Stop Now Open: We are delighted to announce the opening of Heavenly Rest Stop, the Upper East Side’s newest oasis for coffee and refreshments in the peaceful setting of our Fifth Avenue Cloister and sidewalk. Heavenly Rest Stop provides a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome visitors into our space and introduce them to our parish by offering the elemental hospitality of a peaceful place for food and drink, and an open door to the church for quiet meditation.

Volunteer Opportunities

Fun at Lunchtime! Dedicated volunteers are needed for our Friday Senior Lunch Program.  Help turn Darlington Hall into a café by setting decorative tables, serving a catered buffet lunch, clearing disposable plates, and mingling with diners.  Lead post-meal rounds of Bingo as guests play to win back their $1.00 lunch tab!  This outreach brings needed opportunity for socialization and enjoyment, as well as tasty and nutritious meals, to our neighborhood elderly.  If you can commit one Friday per month from 12:30 pm -2:30 pm, please join this important fellowship.  Contact the Rev. Tom Synan at 212-289-3400, ext. 214 or by email at tsynan@heavenlyrest.org.

CHR Shelter:  The church provides shelter to pre-selected elderly guests Monday through Thursday.  Volunteers are needed to welcome and supervise guests for the night.  Volunteer Coordinator: Marilyn Budzanoski, 212-663-7923.
