All Saints Concert at Evensong
All Saints' Sunday — November 4, 2007

In observance of All Saints, the feast day of the Church of the Heavenly Rest, a Choral Evensong will feature spoken meditations chosen from the writings of the Saints, including St. Augustine and St. Teresa of Avila. Interspersed with the readings will be musical excerpts from well-known requiems by Mozart, Brahms, Fauré, Duruflé, and Victoria, as presented by the Heavenly Rest Choir with organ.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Join us at 4:30 pm as the Choristers present Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, accompanied by harpist Emily Mitchell.
At 5:00 pm the Heavenly Rest Choir present the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. This service, modelled after the tradition at King's College, Cambridge, alternates scriptures which foretell the birth of Jesus Christ with choral music and traditional carols.

Annual Christmas Pageant

Over 100 costumed children present our Annual Christmas Pageant as the Christmas Story is reenacted through scripture and familiar carols. Georgio the donkey leads the procession and is joined by other live animals. Come early to get a seat for the 3:30 and 5:00 pm performances on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve Service

The First Eucharist of Christmas is celebrated at 11:00 pm on Christmas Eve, preceded at 10:30 pm with the Music of Christmas. Traditional carols and lessons will be sung and read in the candlelit church.

Organist Gail Archer performs Messiaen

Concert Organist Gail Archer performs La Natvité du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen on the 5-manual, 145-rank organ at Heavenly Rest. Grammy Award nominee Gail Archer, America's premier professional female contemporary organist, is devoting a season-long concert series to the 100th birthday of French composer/organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). In his honor, Archer takes us on a Messiaen musical journey exploring all six of his organ works, while showcasing six of Manhattan's superior church organs — starting Sunday, January 13 with La Nativité du Seigneur performed at Church of the Heavenly Rest, and ending May 29 with Livre du Saint Sacrement at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Known for complimenting Messiaen's works with technical prowess, Archer continues her dedication by serving as the only organist to perform his works on six different instruments throughout New York City.

Music of the Renaissance and Baroque Periods

Charles Dodsley Walker, founder and conductor, and The Canterbury Choral Society present a program of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Works include Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli and J.S. Bach's Motet No. 3, Jesu, meine Freude. Guest artists Lyra Davidica, led by Andrew Sheranian, will perform a selection of music of the Early Baroque.

Passiontide Evensong

Mollie Nichols, Director of Music, will conduct the string ensemble and play continuo.
